Towy Riders - Welsh Criterium Championships 2014 - Chepstow
The Towy Riders youth cycling club were once again in action in Chepstow at the Welsh Criterium championships. The centre of the historical border town was closed off to create a spectacular and challenging course that included a steep climb up a “pave” section”. It provided some spectacular racing on a fine summer evening with four times World Champion Hugh Porter MBE providing the commentary.
The riders were supported by a large crowd all the way around the 1.2km course.
The under 8s’ began the evening with Cian Evans getting on the podium and 5 year old Ilan Dafydd getting the loudest cheer for fighting up the steep hill each time. The under 10s’ were quick off the mark with Iolo Dafydd chasing the leaders for a fine third place while Awen Roberts powered round for second place in the girls. The pace in the under 12s’ was relentless from the gun, with Guto Dafydd breaking away for a fine solo win. The chasers included Iwan Evans with a great 3rd place. Emma Finucane won a fine sprint to take first in the under 12 girls from Amy Cole riding for Sosban riders, but also a member of Towy Riders. Rosie Finucane rode strongly to finish 3rd. The under 14s’ and under 16s’ race was run at lightning pace, some of the top UK riders sprinting up the climb each time. Owain Roberts raced well to finish 4th in the under 14 boys.
It proved to be a really successful evenings racing for the Carmarthen club who now look forward to the Welsh circuit race championships in Rhyl next weekend.
