Race Report - Final Round (Welsh and South of England Track Omnium championships)
The Towy riders youth cycling club were in action in the final round of the Welsh and
South of England Track Omnium championships at the Newport International
Velodrome last weekend. The final round also meant that places were up for grabs
to progress to the British championships later this year. The club had competitors in
all the youth categories for both girls and boys. The riders had to compete in four
different races over the course of the day. The racing started with an individual time-
trial, followed by a scratch race then an elimination and concluding with a points
race. In the under 12 girls Bethany Bennet showed great consistency getting 3 rd
overall. Iolo Dafydd led initially after the time trial and battled until the last race taking
second overall on the day. Tomos Perkins also raced well throughout the day. The
Towy girls once again took the honours in the U14 girls by taking all three steps on
the podium with Emma Finucane winning her third win by taking 1 st , Dannielle Parker
2 nd and Amy Cole 3 rd with Rosie Finucane completing a fantastic performance with 4 th
place. Evan Richards continued to show his talent on the track took his third win in
the series taking 1 st in the under 14 boys with Guto Dafydd in 2nd with Bryn Davies
and Cian Roberts also competing well in all the races. Both Ella Barnwell and Owain
Roberts racing at under 16 level continued to race well for Backstead cycling team.
The top five from each category will progress to the British Omnium Championships.
