2014 - Welsh Schools CX and Round 5 of Welsh CX series...

Last weekend saw the busy Towy Riders bike racers compete in the double header at Brecon on the Saturday and the Sunday. The first day saw the riders compete in the Welsh Schools Cyclo-Cross championships, against riders across Wales, competing for their schools.

In years 1 and 2 there were Ilan Dafydd produced his best performance coming fourth.

The years 3 and 4 riders showed some great skill in the increasingly slippy conditions, with Rory Gravelle and Dafydd King performing brilliantly.


Liam Edwards raced strongly for fourth place, supported by Iolo Dafydd and Tomos Perkins in the years 5 and 6 race.

A dominant performance by Guto Dafydd in years 7 and 8 saw him win by over a minute, with Cian Roberts getting third with a gutsy performance and Bryn Davies riding strongly just outside the podium.

Ioan Thomas rode strongly to get second in the year 11 boys race, with Tomos King in support, enjoying the large expanse of the senior boys course.


Round 5 Welsh CX Series - Brecon

The following day the Towies returned in strength to Brecon for the latest round of the Welsh Cyclo- Cross league. Conditions were better than the previous day, with the ground drying out to provide some really fast and furious racing.


The battle continued in the under 8’s, with Rory Gravelle with the bit between his teeth, and unstoppable in the final sprint, taking the win in the boys race. Rhys Percey gained another high finish in 8th, supported by Ilan Dafydd.

In the under 10’s Sean Finucane, Dafydd King and Amy Geatrick rode strongly and were in the mix throughout the race finishing 18th, 19th, and 7th girl respectively.

A large field in the under 12’s included nine Towy riders. Rosie Finucane proved once again head and shoulders above the opposition taking a fantastic win in the girls race, while Iolo Dafydd battled hard throughout to take fifth, supported by Sam Smith, Gruff Daniel, Charlie Barnwell, Tomos Perkins, Oliver Percey, Morgan Lloyd and Pearce Doherty.

The Towies were on form in the under 14's with Eluned King taking the win on the senior course, with Emma Finucane third and Danni Parker fourth. The boys showed they could match the girls with Owain Roberts once again dominant taking first, Guto Dafydd 3rd, Cian Roberts 6th and Bryn Davies 8th.

The under 16’s provided the spectators with some fast racing, with Ioan Thomas coming third supported by Tomos King in 6th.

In the seniors race 138 riders lined up for what proved to be an hour of non-stop exhaustion for many. With the capacity starting field, the course was extended to spread the riders. The fast conditions suited many of the road-riders. Top performance came from Robyn Davies getting 10th veteran, with great rides from Bryan Geatrick, Geraint Roberts, Wayne Jones, Steve Parker and Steven Percey.

The Towy riders move on to Gorseinon next weekend for round six of the Welsh Cyclo-Cross league.
