Newtown - CX (Round 7)
Last weekend saw the busy Towy Riders bike racers head north to Newtown, Powys for the latest round of the WelshCyclo Cross league. Conditions were reasonable to begin with, although some points of the course were greasy, with the wooded area cutting up badly. Many bikes in the youth and senior races were clogging up with mud after only a couple of laps.
The battle continued in the under 8’s, with Rory Gravelle chasing Cian Evans hard for the whole race, but came away with a valiant second place with Rhys Percey gaining another high finish of 6th.
In the under 10’s Dafydd King and Amy Geatrick rode strongly and were in the mix throughout the race. Dafydd came 11th overall and Amy 7th girl.
Four Towies lined up in the under 12’s with Iolo Dafydd battling hard throughout to take fourth. Pearce Doherty came 14th supported by Tomos Perkins and Oliver Percey who came 16th and 19th respectively.
The Towies once again showed their strength in the under 14’s with Eluned King taking the win for the girls on the senior course. The boys dominated the race with Owain Roberts taking first and Guto Dafydd just missing out on second in a sprint finish, taking third.
The under 16’s provided the spectators with some fast racing, with Ioan Thomas coming second supported by Tomos King in 13th.
In the seniors race the riders lined up for what proved to be an hour of non-stop exhaustion, technical difficulties and mechanical failures for many. The full course was extended to include some steps that left the riders carrying their bikes and gasping for breath.
The fast conditions on half of the course along the river Severn suited many of the road-riders. Top performance came from Robyn Davies getting 5th veteran, with great rides from Bryan Geatrick and Steven Percey
The Towy riders move closer to home at Pembrey next weekend for round eight of the Welsh Cyclo-Cross league.
