Race Report - Abergavenny Grand Prix

The Abergavenny Grand Prix took place last weekend, a highlight in the British Cycle Racing calendar. It gives the youths the opportunity to race on the same circuit as some of the best professional riders in Britain. A number of the Towy Riders were in action on the closed street circuit in the centre of Abergavenny, with multiple World Champion, Hugh Porter, providing the commentary. The streets were packed with supporters shouting encouragement.

The racing started with the youngest riders, with six year old Ilan Dafydd coming a fantastic 4th in the under 8’s race.

The Towy girls proved too fast in the under 10’s with Awen Roberts taking the win and Bethany Bennett in second.

A large field in the under 12 boys saw the field split and riders trying to bridge across to the leaders. Iolo Dafydd made the break after a long chase and came away with a great 4th place. The Towies had four competitors in the under 14 boys where Guto Dafydd and Owain Roberts attacked early and escaped the field. The pair worked tirelessly and established a gap that was too big for the field to close. Guto took the win in the sprint by the narrowest of margins from Owain.

There was a gutsy ride from Bryn Davies in 7th and Cian Roberts in 8th.
